Praise for this book

“In this important book Joscelyn Godwin has accomplished the nearly impossible, masterfully summarizing and synthesizing widely disparate approaches to the perennial question of Atlantis. Much more than a catalog of possible Atlantis locations, occult Atlantology is finally accorded the importance it deserves, including a cogent analysis of esoteric cycles of time, the Four World Ages, the Yuga Cycle, and the…”

📝 Description: Atlantis and the Cycles of Time: Prophecies, Traditions, and Occult Revelations

A comprehensive study of the major occult writings on Atlantis - Fully examines the many occult teachings on Atlantis, including those from G. I. Gurdjieff, Madame Blavatsky, Julius Evola, Edgar Cayce, Fabre d'Olivet, and Dion Fortune - Shows how these writings correlate with the concept of cyclical history, such as the Mayan calendar and 2012, the Age of Aquarius, and the four Yugas - By a renowned scholar, author, editor, and translator of more than 30 books Atlantis has held a perennial place in the collective imagination of humanity from ancient Greece onward. Many of the great minds of the occult and esoteric world wrote at length on their theories of Atlantis--about its high culture, its possible location, its ultimate demise, and their predictions of a return to Atlantean enlightenment or the downfall of modern society. Beginning with a review of the rationalist writings on Atlantis--those that use geographic and geologic data to validate their theories--renowned scholar Joscelyn Godwin then analyzes and compares writings on Atlantis from many of the great occultists and esotericists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Fabre d'Olivet, G. I. Gurdjieff, Guido von List, Julius Evola, Edgar Cayce, Dion Fortune, and René Guénon, whose writings often stem from deeper, metaphysical sources, such as sacred texts, prophecy, or paranormal communication. Seeking to unravel and explain the histories and interpretations of Atlantis and its kindred myths of Lemuria and Mu, the author shows how these different views go hand-in-hand with the concept of cyclical history, such as the Vedic system of the four Yugas, the Mayan calendar with its 2012 end-date, the theosophical system of root races, and the precession of the equinoxes. Venturing broader and deeper than any other book on Atlantis, this study also covers reincarnation, human evolution or devolution, the origins of race, and catastrophe theory.

Godwin’s meticulous scholarship provides a robust framework for understanding Atlantis within occult traditions, effectively linking diverse figures like Blavatsky and Cayce to broader cycles of time. However, readers seeking hard archaeological evidence or scientific validation will find this work entirely unsuited to their needs, as it deliberately operates within the mystical heart of legend rather than rationalist theory. It is best appreciated by those already comfortable with esoteric philosophy and willing to engage with complex cyclical historical models. Skeptics of occult traditions may find the reliance on spiritual authorities alienating, making this a niche but valuable resource for its specific audience.

❓ Frequently asked questions

No, the book doesn't aim to offer definitive physical proof. Instead, it explores how various occult traditions *interpreted* Atlantis, viewing it often as a symbolic or archetypal reality rather than solely a measurable geographical location, and its implications for human evolution.

While it touches on themes popular in New Age thought (like the Age of Aquarius), the book is a rigorous academic study of historical occult and esoteric perspectives, written by a respected scholar of esotericism, not a contemporary New Age manifesto.

📖 Who should read this

🎯 Key themes and symbolism

Occult Atlantis Interpretations

The book explores the varied theories of 19th and 20th-century occultists such as Blavatsky, Gurdjieff, Evola, Cayce, Fortune, and Fabre d'Olivet. It details their mystical insights into Atlantean culture, its possible location, and ultimate demise, contrasting these esoteric views with more conventional perspectives on the lost continent.

Cyclical History & Prophecy

This theme connects Atlantean lore to broader concepts of cosmic cycles, including the Mayan Great Cycle, the Hindu Yugas, and the astrological Ages. The book suggests a recurring pattern of civilization's rise, fall, and potential rebirth, showing how these ancient prophecies are woven into esoteric understandings of Atlantis and humanity's destiny.

Rational vs. Esoteric Views

Godwin begins by reviewing geological and geographical arguments that attempt to validate Atlantis's existence. He then pivots to analyze how esoteric traditions offer alternative, symbolic, and spiritual understandings that transcend mere physical evidence, framing Atlantis not just as a lost land but as a profound archetype within human consciousness.

📜 Historical context

The legend of Atlantis has captivated thinkers since Plato. The 19th and 20th centuries witnessed a significant occult revival, with figures like Blavatsky and Gurdjieff integrating Atlantis into their profound esoteric systems. Godwin’s book continues this tradition, offering a scholarly examination and comparative analysis of these diverse mystical interpretations within the broader stream of Western esotericism.
