The Prophecies
✍️ Nostradamus, Richard Sieburth, Stephane GersonPrizewinning translator Richard Sieburth renders the strange, visionary French quatrains of Nostradamus into English with facing-page original text. Rather than treating the sixteen-century seer's work as mere riddles, this Penguin Classics volume highlights the poetic sweep and jagged brilliance of the apocalyptic verses. Historian Stéphane Gerson contributes introductory material and notes that contextualize the political and cultural forces surrounding Renaissance prophecy.
Praise for this book
“A vigorous, wry, alert new translation . . . A richer, more wrangling read than any other English translator has managed or even attempted . . . [It] offers English readers the experience of reading the [prophecies] steadily and sequentially, rather than piecemeal, and with the original French on facing pages, making it possible to read the prophecies as acts of writing rather than riddles. . . .”
“Freshly translated [and] stamped with the approval of the editors of the venerable Penguin Classics series . . . this new dual-language edition of The Prophecies, translated by the excellent Richard Sieburth, makes a case for Nostradamus as a poet of sweep and impact. . . . Never mind the Weather Channel. If the Penguin Classics people are telling me to be afraid, then I am prepared to be very afraid indeed.”
“The avant-garde occult classic The Prophecies has found its ideal translator in Richard Sieburth, and Sieburth and Stéphane Gerson have provided superb introductions and notes. . . . The Prophecies is riddled with riot, predicting a panoply of possible futures while all the time registering the trauma of its historical moment and, against all odds, our own.”

⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
This Penguin Classics edition successfully reframes Nostradamus through a rigorous scholarly lens, emphasizing literary merit over sensational prediction. It is an excellent resource for academics and serious students of esoteric history who seek context rather than clairvoyance. However, it does not suit readers seeking straightforward fortune-telling or quick answers to current events. The dense, academic approach may alienate casual mystics looking for easy validation of their beliefs. Those expecting a mystical guide will find the tone too detached and analytical. It is a compelling case for literary significance, but requires patience and an interest in historical criticism rather than supernatural allure.
