Fun fact
Overlock delivers a charming, if eclectic, collection that shines for its sincerity and the sheer breadth of her experience. It succeeds as a personal testament rather than a rigorous academic study. Scholars of high theory may find it too anecdotal, but casual readers and admirers of Maine’s artistic heritage will treasure its authenticity. It sits comfortably as a niche gem for those who value the journey of the artist as much as the art itself.

📝 Description: Vision in Poetry and Painting

Poetry and art of Maine and beyond illustrated in color with 18 of the poet's paintings. Trudy Overlock has a wide experience of life, from department store work on many levels to public relations to legal secretary and paralegal work to photo-colorist to private secretary for a Wall Street financier to minister's wife to advertising copywriter to mural and stage artist for dance studios to baker and supplier of pies to restaurants. Trudy was a professional vocalist, singing at a wide range of venues, from Maine's Lakewood Inn to the grandstand at the Skowhegan State Fair, with freebees singing for the Togus VA Medical Center and the Maine State Prison. She designed and had built the home where she raised her two stepsons; in Vassalboro she has established a gallery where a hundred of her paintings are on display in the eighteenth-century house she has restored and which is cited on the National Register of Historic Places.

This volume presents a distinct convergence of painting and poetry, offering eighteen color works paired with verses that reflect Overlock’s life in Maine. While the combination of visual artistry and lyrical expression provides a rich, multi-sensory experience, it may not suit readers seeking traditional narrative structures or dense philosophical treatises. Those looking for straightforward literary criticism or purely academic analysis might find the memoiristic nature too personal or diffuse. However, for those open to a hybrid format that prioritizes emotional resonance and artistic integrity over conventional plot or argumentation, this collection stands as a vibrant testament to creative vigor. It is a beautiful, if niche, exploration of how word and image can mutually illuminate the natural world.

Good but demanding

First purchase from this shop. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. I found myself reading passages aloud just to sit with them. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Still worth having on the shelf.

Ordered this after seeing it referenced in another book I was studying. There's real depth here that reveals itself on a second reading. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. A few pages arrived with light corner wear, though nothing serious. Happy enough with the purchase.

Solid edition

My book club chose this last month. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition. I'd have loved an index, but that's on the original text. Good, with the caveats above.
