Been hunting for a decent copy of this text for ages. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. Shipping was quick too.
As someone who reads a lot in this field, I can be picky. It rewards patience more than any book I've bought this year. Five stars from me.
This edition finally does the material justice. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. Five stars from me.
Not my usual area but wanted to branch out. There's real depth here that reveals itself on a second reading. The font runs small in the appendices. Still worth having on the shelf.
Perfect companion for my morning study sessions. Some chapters demand a slow, careful read, and that's exactly the point. The font runs small in the appendices. Still worth having on the shelf.
Long-time student of the esoteric here. It's become a regular reference in my practice. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. Great value for what you get.
I collect works on this subject and this is a worthy addition. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. It reads better in small doses — a chapter at a time with notes. It assumes more background than a beginner might have. Still worth having on the shelf.
Papus presents a dense but rewarding treatise that demands serious study from its audience. The text successfully elevates tarot from simple divination to a vessel for ancient wisdom, integrating Kabbalah and medical hypnosis in a novel way. However, it is candidly unsuitable for casual readers or those seeking light entertainment; the material is too rigorous and philosophical for such tastes. It will also frustrate those who prefer modern tarot interpretations over traditional Marseilles symbolism. This book is strictly for those ready to engage with complex esoteric traditions and understand the psyche through an occult lens.

📖 Who should read this
Readers seeking a bridge between clinical psychology and high magic. Ideal for Martinists, Kabbalists, and serious students of the Marseilles tradition who desire intellectual depth over superficial divination.
🎯 Key themes and symbolism
Ancient Atlantean Origins
Papus argues that tarot symbols are not medieval inventions but surviving fragments of Atlantean and Egyptian mysteries. He posits that these cards preserve a universal wisdom tradition, linking contemporary occult practice directly to lost civilizations and their advanced spiritual technologies.
Kabbalistic Integration
The text rigorously maps the tarot deck onto the Tree of Life, demonstrating how Jewish mysticism informs cartomantic interpretation. This section reveals the structural harmony between Hebrew letters, planetary correspondences, and card meanings, offering a systematic approach to esoteric study.
Medical Hypnosis
Drawing on his background as a physician, Papus integrates hypnotic theory with magical practice. He suggests that the tarot serves as a psychological tool for accessing the subconscious, bridging the gap between clinical hypnosis and spiritual initiation for the modern seeker.
