The Occult in Russian and Soviet Culture: From Tongan Villages to American Suburbs

Been hunting for a decent copy of this text for ages. Every rereading turns up something I missed. A text you study rather than simply read. One of my better finds this year.

This edition finally does the material justice. You can tell why this work has endured. The material is presented clearly and the structure makes it easy to revisit key passages. One of my better finds this year.

Was skeptical at first. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected. Still worth having on the shelf.

Long-time student of the esoteric here. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. The print is clean and easy on the eyes for long sessions. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected. Recommended with reservations.

I've read excerpts online before, but having the full text is different. The historical context alone makes it worth the price. A text you study rather than simply read. If you're drawn to this subject, don't hesitate.

Took a chance on this and glad I did. I appreciated how the argument builds steadily from first principles. Deserves a place on any esoteric bookshelf.

Cornell University Press delivers a rigorous text suited for academic researchers and serious historians of esoteric philosophy. Because the publisher's provided details remain minimal, readers seeking a light introductory overview or a practical guide to mystical practices will likely find this volume overly dense and academic. It does not suit casual enthusiasts of popular occultism who prefer narrative-driven storytelling or step-by-step esoteric manuals. Instead, its position on our shelf marks it as a specialized work of cultural history. For those invested in intellectual history and the cross-cultural transmission of occult ideas, it provides a valuable, albeit challenging, academic contribution.
