My book club chose this last month. Not a light read, but far more accessible than I feared. The font runs small in the appendices. Happy enough with the purchase.
I collect works on this subject and this is a worthy addition. The ideas are old but land with surprising force today. You can tell why this work has endured.
Not my usual area but wanted to branch out. The print is clean and easy on the eyes for long sessions. I appreciated how the argument builds steadily from first principles. Good, with the caveats above.
Not my usual area but wanted to branch out. Some sections stopped me cold in the best way. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition. Glad I finally picked this up.
I've read excerpts online before, but having the full text is different. I found myself reading passages aloud just to sit with them. It reads better in small doses — a chapter at a time with notes. Solid, if not essential.
Issued by an esteemed university press, *Lure of the Sinister* approaches its subject with the sober distance of academic scholarship. While the edition's own description is sparse on specific case studies or primary source details, its place on the occult philosophy shelf signals a rigorous, analytical tone rather than a practical guide. It does not suit readers looking for ritual instructions, personal grimoires, or dramatic accounts of devil worship, as its primary concern is cultural history and intellectual critique. Instead, it serves discerning readers who appreciate critical distance and historical context over occult spectacle or sensationalism.
