Behind the Paranormal: Everything You Know Is Wrong
A factual correction of common paranormal misconceptions by an experienced author.
Written by Joe Nickell, a senior research fellow at the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, Behind the Paranormal addresses widespread errors regarding supernatural claims. Nickell draws upon his background as a former private investigator and forensic consultant to examine phenomena that often confuse the public. The book challenges popular beliefs by applying logical analysis and historical context to subjects such as ghosts, UFOs, and psychic abilities. It does not dismiss these topics lightly but instead dissects the evidence with precision. The text is organized into distinct sections that cover specific areas of inquiry. Readers will find chapters dedicated to the history of spiritualism, the reality of hauntings, and the science behind alleged telepathy. Nickell also investigates claims related to crop circles, Bigfoot sightings, and the Loch Ness Monster. He utilizes primary sources, including historical records, scientific studies, and firsthand accounts from investigators. This approach allows him to separate fact from fiction in each case study. The work is suitable for readers who seek clear, evidence-based explanations of strange occurrences. It may not satisfy those looking for validation of their existing paranormal beliefs or for entertaining ghost stories without critical analysis.
The book sits within the tradition of skeptical inquiry in American culture. It reflects a period where public interest in the paranormal grew alongside scientific scrutiny, challenging popular media narratives with factual reporting and historical context.

My book club chose this last month. You can tell why this work has endured. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected. Still worth having on the shelf.
Exactly what I was looking for. Plenty of passages worth underlining; my copy is already full of margin notes. A text you study rather than simply read. One of my better finds this year.
I've read excerpts online before, but having the full text is different. It connects ideas I'd only seen treated separately elsewhere. The font runs small in the appendices.
Situated in our occult philosophy section, this volume makes a bold promise to upend conventional understanding, though the publisher's provided details remain remarkably sparse. Readers expecting a standard narrative or detailed case studies should be cautious, as the text must be judged primarily by its conceptual category rather than an extensive editorial blurb. It is ideally suited for open-minded researchers comfortable navigating broad speculative themes and fringe traditions. Conversely, it will not suit empirical historians or readers demanding exhaustive citation, rigid scientific proofs, or highly specific narrative arcs. For the curious philosopher willing to engage with the unknown on its own open-ended terms, it serves as a provocative addition to the shelf.
