About the author
Bengt Ankarloo was a Swedish historian and professor at Lund University known for his scholarship on European witchcraft and magic. He co-edited the multi-volume series Witchcraft and Magic in Europe with Stuart Clark, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press (originally Athlone Press), which combined political, legal, and social history with cultural anthropology, historical psychology, and gender studies across six volumes. His contributions span Biblical and Pagan Societies, the Middle Ages, and the Period of the Witch Trials, tracing how European magical belief and practice developed from antiquity through the era of the witch trials and into the emergence of a shared, and later contested, European concept of magic. The series remains a standard academic reference on the history of European witchcraft.
