The Magic Flute Unveiled: Esoteric Symbolism in Mozart's Masonic Opera (Original)

My third book from this store and this one might be the best. Plenty of passages worth underlining; my copy is already full of margin notes. Would buy from this store again.

This edition finally does the material justice. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. Plenty of passages worth underlining; my copy is already full of margin notes. One of my better finds this year.

As someone who reads a lot in this field, I can be picky. It reads better in small doses — a chapter at a time with notes. Not a light read, but far more accessible than I feared. One of my better finds this year.

This has been on my wishlist for months. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. A few pages arrived with light corner wear, though nothing serious. Good, with the caveats above.

Jacques Chailley provides a rigorous exploration of how sacred geometry and brotherly love were encoded in the libretto, illuminating how Mozart embedded Masonic rituals and alchemical transformations within the score. This study demonstrates that the opera is not merely entertainment but a coherent symbolic system rooted in Enlightenment mysticism. While valuable for scholars of esoteric architecture, it does not suit casual listeners seeking simple musical appreciation or those uninterested in dense theoretical frameworks. It demands patience from readers expecting light reading, as it dissects character archetypes and narrative structures with scholarly precision rather than narrative flair.
