⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
This exceeded my expectations. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition. It connects ideas I'd only seen treated separately elsewhere. Some archaic spellings slow things down. Still worth having on the shelf.
Matthews provides a compelling, albeit dense, decoding of Welsh texts as spiritual guides rather than simple stories. This approach appeals strongly to occultists and mythologists but may frustrate readers seeking straightforward narrative analysis or historical factualism. The book demands patience from those unfamiliar with initiatory patterns or the specific archetypes of the Four Branches. It is not suited for casual readers expecting light entertainment, as it requires engagement with complex symbolic interpretations and esoteric concepts central to Celtic spiritual practice.
