Choices and Inceptions: Traditional Electional Astrology

Dr. Benjamin Dykes delivers a scholarly yet accessible compilation of traditional electional astrology texts, making it a crucial addition to any serious practitioner’s library. The translation of key medieval Latin works provides unique insights into techniques like lunar mansions that are rarely discussed in modern contexts. However, this book is not for casual readers or those seeking quick horoscopes; it demands patience and a willingness to engage with dense historical material. It also may frustrate those preferring psychological astrology over technical timing methods. The ethical discussions add depth but require philosophical openness. Ultimately, it serves the dedicated traditionalist well but remains too specialized and text-heavy for general interest.

This volume is an indispensable resource for dedicated practitioners seeking to master the lost art of astrological timing. By translating pivotal medieval Latin works, including Sahl's 'On Elections' and al-'Imrani's 'The Book of Choices,' Dr. Benjamin Dykes provides a comprehensive modern collection that was previously fragmented or inaccessible. Readers will gain direct access to foundational techniques such as lunar mansions and planetary hour systems, enriched by an introduction that thoughtfully explores the ethical and philosophical dimensions of timing. It is particularly valuable for those who wish to move beyond basic natal astrology and command the stars with precision. Whether you are a scholar of esoteric history or a serious astrologer aiming to deepen your practical skills, this book offers the rigorous textual foundation necessary for authentic traditional electional practice.
