Look for diagrams with readable labels, a glossary and exercises with explanations. Check whether the author assumes you already have a chart or explains how chart data is obtained. Birth time affects some chart features; a careful book acknowledges uncertainty instead of offering precise conclusions from incomplete information.

Choose one technique and a clearly stated system
For a specialist purchase, identify the actual subject: natal interpretation, transits, horary questions or electional work. These are not interchangeable introductions. Read the prerequisites and a sample chapter before buying a book whose title only promises advanced astrology.
Check which zodiac, house system and interpretive tradition the author uses. For example, a book teaching a sidereal framework may not match exercises from a tropical-zodiac course. You do not need to decide that one system is correct to recognise that switching frameworks mid-course can make the instruction confusing.
I want historical context
Separate source texts from modern interpretation
For history, favour editions that identify the original author, date, source language and translator. An introduction should distinguish the source text from the editor's explanation. Notes and an index are particularly useful when technical terms have changed meaning or spelling.
A modern commentary can be easier to enter than an unannotated historical text. Astrology is a subject of cultural and interpretive study here, not a guarantee about events or people. Avoid treating a book's predictions as a substitute for evidence or professional advice.
