About the author
R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz (1887-1961) was a French esotericist and Egyptologist whose work argued that ancient Egyptian temple architecture and symbolism encoded a sophisticated understanding of number, proportion, and consciousness. His major study, The Temple of Man, based on years of fieldwork at the Luxor temple complex, proposed that its architecture was constructed as a deliberate symbolic system, a thesis that influenced later alternative readings of Egyptian history. Sacred Science: The King of Pharaonic Theocracy (1982, Inner Traditions International) extends this argument to Egyptian civilization as a whole, positioning Egypt rather than Greece as the origin of sacred science in the West. Other titles collected here, including A Study of Numbers, Symbol and the Symbolic, and Esoterism and Symbol, develop his broader ideas about symbolic thought, number, and the process of becoming as ways of understanding ancient knowledge. Schwaller de Lubicz worked outside mainstream Egyptology, and his interpretations remain contested among specialists, but his books continue to be read as a foundational body of esoteric Egyptological thought.
