About the author
Julian Goodare is a historian and professor at the University of Edinburgh whose research focuses on early modern Scotland, with particular attention to the European witch-hunts of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. His book The European Witch-Hunt, published by Routledge, surveys why tens of thousands of people, most of them poor women, were tortured and executed across Europe and North America during three centuries of witch-hunting, drawing on historical, sociological, and legal perspectives to explain the phenomenon. His earlier edited collection, The Scottish Witch-Hunt in Context, published by Manchester University Press in 2002, brings together essays covering the full span of Scottish witch-hunting, including studies of specific panics. Goodare has also directed research projects cataloguing Scottish witchcraft trials. His books are scholarly works aimed at students and researchers of early modern history rather than at readers seeking accounts of magical practice itself.
