Praise for this book

“Timothy Leary was every bit as dangerous as Nixon and J. Edgar Hoover believed him to be, because he--the High Priest of LSD--could change people's minds. Joseph L. Flatley's The Occult Timothy Leary boils Leary's lesser-known explorations of the Western esoteric tradition down to the good stuff. A volume like this has been long overdue!”

Flatley excels at connecting Leary's psychedelic advocacy to deep occult traditions, offering a profound recontextualization. A vital addition to any serious occult library.

📝 Description: The Occult Timothy Leary: The Tarot, Magical States, and Post-Terrestrial Evolution

Joseph L. Flatley examines the esoteric interests of psychologist Timothy Leary, tracking how the countercultural figure combined Western occultism with his psychedelic experiments. Featuring a foreword by R. U. Sirius, the text begins in Part 1 by chronicling Leary's path across chapters covering his early life, the Millbrook community, and his time as a fugitive philosopher. This biographical section details his interactions with Ram Dass, Robert Anton Wilson, the Weather Underground, and the Black Panthers, showing how these encounters shaped his Eight Circuit Model of consciousness, his theories on reincarnation, and his early interest in computers and post-terrestrial human evolution. Part 2 focuses directly on Leary's original tarot system. In chapters addressing the hermetic-neurogenetic meaning of the cards, correspondences to the Major Arcana, and using the tarot in divination, Flatley analyzes Leary's custom deck, which is reproduced in the volume. He explains the unique order of the cards, their astrological correspondences, and their alignment with the Eight Circuit Model, offering direct instructions for practical divination. As an investigative journalist, podcast host, and author of New Age Grifter, Flatley grounds his analysis in Leary's own writings, NeuroLogic, and historical accounts of countercultural radicalism. The book suits readers seeking a detailed study of mid-20th-century Western esotericism, psychedelic history, and altered states. It does not suit those looking for a general biography of Leary or a standard introduction to historic tarot traditions.
