Long-time student of the esoteric here. Some chapters demand a slow, careful read, and that's exactly the point. I found myself reading passages aloud just to sit with them. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected. Recommended with reservations.
My book club chose this last month. I found myself reading passages aloud just to sit with them. Still worth having on the shelf.
Bought this as a gift for my sister and ended up ordering a second copy for myself. The historical context alone makes it worth the price.
Perfect companion for my morning study sessions. The ideas are old but land with surprising force today. Not a light read, but far more accessible than I feared.
Honestly wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm impressed. A text you study rather than simply read. Highly recommend to serious students.
I collect works on this subject and this is a worthy addition. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. Recommended if you're ready to do the work.
Atwood provides a thoughtful, accessible introduction to Tarot, successfully framing it as a tool for self-exploration rather than fortune-telling. The educational integration makes it particularly suitable for classroom or library settings targeting young adults. However, seasoned occultists or those seeking rigorous historical analysis will find this work too simplistic and superficial. It lacks the depth required by serious students of esoteric history, focusing instead on basic principles and practical application. Consequently, while excellent for beginners, it may feel overly elementary to readers already familiar with standard Tarot literature who desire more complexity or traditional mystical context.
