Fun fact
Harmer offers a accessible, visually rich guide that makes shamanic astrology approachable for the novice. Its strength lies in the practical application of animal archetypes to daily life. However, scholars of indigenous cultures may find the syncretic approach reductive. It sits comfortably in the popular self-help aisle, bridging astrology and spirituality. It is a charming, if somewhat simplified, entry point for those curious about animal totems.

📝 Description: Shamanic Astrology: Understanding Your Spirit Animal Sign

Western-based astrology has a provocative counterpart in the Native American medicine wheel, with a spirit animal equivalent for each sign of the zodiac. In this thoughtful book, Lucy Harmer shows readers how to find the spirit animal that corresponds to their birth sign. She provides detailed descriptions of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the twelve spirit animals--for example, falcon is enthusiastic and adventurous but can be impulsive and impatient, while deer is sociable and eloquent but can be lazy and superficial. Once readers determine their spirit animal, they can better understand their relationships with family, friends, and associates. Readers can also discover those people who are part of their animal clan and the various compatibilities and incompatibilities between all the spirit animals. They will be able to uncover the hidden treasures of their personalities and their secret talents, as well as the color, plant, and totem stone corresponding to each spirit animal. For readers who want to take shamanic astrology to the next level, the book includes the first complete lunar calendar for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to help them determine their spirit animal rising sign and discover how the moon influences their daily life.

Harmer offers a compelling synthesis of Western zodiac traits and Indigenous animal totems, creating a vivid framework for self-discovery. The text is well-structured, guiding readers from identification to application in relationships and personal growth. However, it does not suit those seeking rigorous academic analysis of either astrology or anthropology, as the approach is devotional rather than scholarly. It may also disappoint purists who view the blending of these distinct traditions as culturally appropriative rather than harmonious. Ultimately, it is a warm, practical tool for spiritual exploration but lacks the depth required for critical study.

Very good

I've read excerpts online before, but having the full text is different. I found myself reading passages aloud just to sit with them. The language takes some getting used to, but it becomes part of the charm. I'd have loved an index, but that's on the original text. Good, with the caveats above.

My third book from this store and this one might be the best. Solid binding, decent paper — holds up to heavy use. It reads better in small doses — a chapter at a time with notes. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.

A treasure

Came across this title in a footnote and had to track it down. It's become a regular reference in my practice. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition. One of my better finds this year.

Very good

Bought this as a gift for my sister and ended up ordering a second copy for myself. The ideas are old but land with surprising force today. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected.
