Fun Fact

Sparkly Kat delivers a vital, intellectually rigorous intervention that bridges the gap between esoteric practice and material reality. The book excels in its etymological depth and fearless political critique, offering a necessary corrective to the depoliticized New Age mainstream. However, readers seeking traditional horoscope interpretations or detached metaphysical theory will find this too grounded in activism. It sits firmly as a manifesto for the radical occultist, essential for those ready to wield the stars as tools for justice rather than mere comfort.

📝 Description: Postcolonial Astrology: Reading the Planets Through Capital, Power, and Labor

Tapping into the political power of magic and astrology for social, community, and personal transformation. In a cross-cultural approach to understanding astrology as a magical language, Alice Sparkly Kat unmasks the political power of astrology, showing how it can be channeled as a force for collective healing and liberation. Too often, magic and astrology are divorced from their potency and cultural contexts: co-opted by neoliberalism, used as a force of oppression, or distilled beyond recognition into applications that belie their individual and collective power. By looking at the symbolic and etymological histories of the sun, moon, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter, we can trace and understand the politics of magic--and challenge our own practices, interrogate our truths, and reshape our institutions to build better frameworks for communities of care. Fearless, radical, and fresh, Sparkly Kat's Postcolonial Astrology ushers in a new wave of astrology revival, refusing to apologize for its magickism and connecting its power to the spirituality and politics we need now. Intersectional, inclusive, and geared towards queer and POC communities, it uses our historical and collective constructs of the planets, sun, and moon to re-chart our subconscious history, redefine the body in the world, and assert our politics of the personal, in astrology and all things.

Occult literature desk

While intellectually rigorous and morally urgent, this work demands a solid grasp of political theory and critical race perspectives, making it inaccessible to casual hobbyists seeking simple horoscope advice. It may frustrate readers who prefer traditional, apolitical astrological methods or those uncomfortable with dense academic language. However, for those willing to engage with its challenging thesis on capital and power, it provides a transformative lens. It is not suitable for individuals seeking quick fixes or detached spiritual guidance without sociopolitical context.

Exactly as described

Honestly wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm impressed. Not a light read, but far more accessible than I feared. Would buy from this store again.

Almost perfect

First purchase from this shop. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted.

Been hunting for a decent copy of this text for ages. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. I'd have loved an index, but that's on the original text. Recommended with reservations.

Grabbed this during a weekend order. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. I'd have loved an index, but that's on the original text. Good, with the caveats above.
