This volume dismantles the myth of Roman passivity regarding celestial divination. Bakhouche reveals how the Republic served as a vibrant crucible, blending Eastern Chaldean traditions with Western sensibilities. Far from being a mere imitator, Rome integrated these esoteric practices into the very fabric of its intellectual, cultural, and political life. The work traces the systematic adoption of star-readers, demonstrating that astrology became a dominant, albeit contested, force in civic identity, proving that the Empire actively shaped, rather than just received, this mystical knowledge.

📖 Why choose it
Why this book is worth reading
Readers fascinated by the intersection of politics and mysticism will find this volume indispensable. It offers a refreshing corrective to the passive view of Roman cultural absorption, revealing instead an active, dynamic engagement with Chaldean star-lore. Scholars and enthusiasts of ancient history gain a deeper understanding of how celestial divination was not merely imported but forged into a unique Roman identity. This book is essential for those who wish to see astrology as a serious political and intellectual force rather than a superficial exotic curiosity, providing a nuanced map of how Rome shaped its own mystical destiny through deliberate integration.

Grabbed this during a weekend order. There's real depth here that reveals itself on a second reading. It connects ideas I'd only seen treated separately elsewhere. It assumes more background than a beginner might have. Recommended with reservations.
Added this to my reference shelf. The material is presented clearly and the structure makes it easy to revisit key passages. Still worth having on the shelf.
This edition finally does the material justice. Plenty of passages worth underlining; my copy is already full of margin notes. If you're drawn to this subject, don't hesitate.
Bakhouche delivers a robust academic dismantling of the myth that Rome passively received Eastern astrological traditions. The text is dense with historical analysis, tracing the systematic adoption of star-readers into civic life with impressive rigor. However, this work will not suit readers seeking light, anecdotal histories or simple horoscopic guides. It demands patience for its scholarly tone and specific focus on intellectual history. While brilliant for specialists in Roman esotericism, casual readers looking for accessible narratives may find the depth of cultural alchemy analysis too heavy and detached from popular entertainment.
