Fun Fact

Russell Targ's 'The Reality of ESP' stands as a foundational text for anyone seeking empirical rigor in the study of psychic phenomena. It meticulously details experiments and real-world applications, offering compelling data rather than mere belief. While it excels in presenting scientific evidence, those seeking a purely spiritual guide or practical 'how-to' for developing abilities may find it too analytical. This book is a crucial entry in parapsychology, demonstrating how serious scientific inquiry can indeed illuminate the most enigmatic aspects of human consciousness, even if it challenges mainstream scientific thought.

📝 Description: The Reality of ESP: A Physicist's Proof of Psychic Abilities

On February 4, 1974, members of the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped nineteen-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst from her Berkeley, California apartment. Desperate to find her, the police called physicist Russell Targ and Pat Price, a psychic retired police commissioner. As Price turned the pages of the police mug book filled with hundreds of photos, suddenly he pointed to one of them and announced, "That's the ringleader." The man was Donald DeFreeze, who was indeed subsequently so identified. Price also described the type and location of the kidnap car, enabling the police to find it within minutes. That remarkable event is one reason Targ believes in ESP. Another occurred when his group made $120,000 by forecasting for nine weeks in a row the changes in the silver-commodity futures market As a scientist, Targ demands proof. His experience is based on two decades of investigations at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), which he cofounded with physicist Harold Puthoff in 1972. This twenty-million dollar program launched during the Cold War was supported by the CIA, NASA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and Army and Air Force Intelligence. The experiments they conducted routinely presented results could have happened by chance less than once in a million. Targ describes four types of experiments: Remote Viewing, in which a person describes places and events independent of space and time. For example, while in California Price drew to scale a Soviet weapons factory at Semipalitinsk with great accuracy later confirmed by Satellite photography. In another remote viewing, Targ accurately sketched an airport in San Andreas, Columbia himself. Distant Mental Influence, where the thoughts of the experimenter can positively or negatively affect the physiology (heart rate, skin resistance, etc.) of a distant person. Whole field isolation, where someone in a state of sensory isolation accurately describes the visual experiences of someone else in another place Precognition and retrocausality, showing that the future can affect the past. That is, the elephant you see on television in the morning can be the cause of your having dreamed about elephants the previous night. Final chapters present evidence for survival after death; explain how ESP works based on the Buddhist/Hindu view of our selves as nonlocal, eternal awareness; discuss the ethics of exercising psychic abilities, and show us how to explore ESP ourselves. "I am convinced," Targ says, "that most people can learn to move from their ordinary mind to one not obstructed by conventional barriers of space and time. Who would not want to try that?"

Occult literature desk

Targ presents a formidable case for ESP, leveraging his background as a physicist to lend credibility to claims that might otherwise be dismissed. The account of experiments aiding in the Patricia Hearst kidnapping and market trend predictions is undeniably gripping and well-documented. However, this book does not suit readers who demand metaphysical depth or those strictly adhering to orthodox scientific paradigms without room for anomaly. It may also disappoint those looking for a purely theoretical treatise, as it focuses heavily on experimental results rather than philosophical discourse. Ultimately, it is a solid, if somewhat dry, defense of psychic abilities that prioritizes data over dogma.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Absolutely not. Russell Targ, a physicist, grounds his arguments in decades of rigorous, controlled experiments conducted at the Stanford Research Institute, often with government oversight and funding, focusing on reproducible results.

The book primarily delves into forms of Extrasensory Perception (ESP), including clairvoyance (perceiving hidden information), precognition (knowing future events), and telepathy (mind-to-mind communication), all explored through scientific methodologies.

📖 Who should read this

🎯 Key themes and symbolism

Scientific ESP Validation

Targ, a seasoned physicist, meticulously outlines the experimental protocols and verifiable results that led him to conclude the reality of extrasensory perception. His work at SRI, backed by government agencies, demonstrates a rigorous, data-driven approach to phenomena often dismissed as unscientific, presenting a formidable challenge to conventional understanding.

Real-World Psychic Impact

Beyond laboratory settings, the book showcases extraordinary instances where psychic abilities provided crucial, actionable intelligence. Readers will encounter detailed accounts, such as the precise location of a kidnap vehicle in the Patricia Hearst case and remarkable success in forecasting silver commodity futures, underscoring the practical utility of these latent human capacities.

Bridging Science and Spirit

This work stands as a testament to the potential convergence of empirical science and esoteric understanding. Targ's journey from a conventional scientific background to a proponent of psychic reality illustrates how a disciplined, investigative mind can explore the frontiers of consciousness, pushing the boundaries of what is considered scientifically plausible and opening doors to deeper mysteries.

📜 Historical context

Emerging from the Cold War era, Targ's research at the Stanford Research Institute was part of a broader, covert government initiative to explore psychic phenomena for intelligence gathering. This institutional backing positioned his work uniquely within the history of parapsychology, elevating it from fringe speculation to serious scientific inquiry, albeit with a classified origin.
