I collect works on this subject and this is a worthy addition. The material is presented clearly and the structure makes it easy to revisit key passages. Already eyeing my next order.
Honestly wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm impressed. The historical context alone makes it worth the price. The text itself is dense but rewarding — you get out what you put in. Glad I finally picked this up.
This edition finally does the material justice. It reads better in small doses — a chapter at a time with notes. The ideas are old but land with surprising force today. Would buy from this store again.
This has been on my wishlist for months. The material is presented clearly and the structure makes it easy to revisit key passages. Glad I finally picked this up.
Finally got around to ordering this. A text you study rather than simply read. Not a light read, but far more accessible than I feared. Deserves a place on any esoteric bookshelf.
Came across this title in a footnote and had to track it down. I found myself reading passages aloud just to sit with them. Great value for what you get.
Smoley succeeds in making once-esoteric teachings available to the modern reader through clear, accessible prose that avoids academic jargon. The revised edition effectively serves as a guide for navigating the complex lineage of Western inner traditions. However, readers seeking rigorous, peer-reviewed historical analysis or dry, detached scholarship will likely find this work too narrative-driven and spiritually oriented. It is not suited for those who prefer purely critical deconstruction over sympathetic engagement with esoteric frameworks. Instead, it appeals to those wanting a vibrant introduction rather than a definitive academic reference.
