The Other Half of Happy: (Middle Grade Novel for Ages 9-12, Bilingual Tween Book)
A bilingual novel about a girl piecing together her identity through family and friendship.
Balcárcel writes with the honesty found in Meg Medina’s work and the poetic sensibility of Kate DiCamillo. The text addresses the specific pain of feeling disconnected from one’s heritage while simultaneously forming deep bonds with peers. Quijana’s journey is not about dramatic events but about the quiet accumulation of moments that define self-worth. The narrative structure mirrors her internal state, moving between the pressure of familial expectations and the comfort of chosen family.
This 2019 Chronicle Books release targets the American middle grade market. It specifically addresses the experience of bicultural families in the United States. The text draws on contemporary discussions regarding autism and LGBTQ+ representation in youth literature.

Ordered this after seeing it referenced in another book I was studying. Plenty of passages worth underlining; my copy is already full of margin notes. The print is clean and easy on the eyes for long sessions. A few pages arrived with light corner wear, though nothing serious. Solid, if not essential.
Took a chance on this and glad I did. You can tell why this work has endured. The typesetting is comfortable for study, with good margins for notes. I'd have loved an index, but that's on the original text. Solid, if not essential.
