A partir de la aparición del libro homónimo, que contiene los rasgos generales de este sistema de pensamiento atribuido a Hermes Trismegisto -fuente de todos los poderes ocultos-, el gran público ha dado en suponer que la obra lo dice todo, cuando de hecho la mayor parte de su contenido consiste en las disertaciones y explicaciones del autor -o los autores- sobre los principios básicos del pensamiento hermético y algunos de sus axiomas. Aun así, es posible que en realidad lo diga todo. Si bien existe un buen número de versiones en español de El Kybalión, la mayoría de ellas parte de traducciones un tanto descuidadas o con pretensiones de corregir el estilo original del autor. En ellas, muchos términos se han usado indiscriminadamente, lo que termina por confundir al lector. En esta traducción se ha cuidado especialmente de respetar el espíritu de la terminología original así como el estilo del autor, que en cierto modo revela su vocación de instructor. Al final se incluye La Tabla de Esmeralda, único texto efectivamente atribuido a Hermes Trismegisto, del que se dice contener toda la verdad en unas cuantas líneas.
