Published by Moon Books as part of the Shamanic Plant Medicine series, this paperback volume by Ross Heaven focuses on ayahuasca, the traditional shamanic medicine of the Amazonian rainforest. Amazonian shamans have employed this plant teacher for millennia to achieve visionary states, undertake astral travel to distant locations, predict future events, and perform healings for their communities. Heaven presents ayahuasca as a tool used for spirit communion, divination, healing, and personal discovery, tracking its long historical usage alongside its increasing adoption by modern practitioners in Western society. The text functions as an introduction to this specific plant spirit, outlining the traditional ritual contexts of the rainforest as well as the modern ways Western shamans now connect to spirit through its use. The book suits readers seeking an introduction to Amazonian teacher plants, spirit travel, and alternative medicine. It does not suit those looking for detailed technical manuals, direct clinical guidebooks, or material covering non-shamanic botanical subjects.

⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
I collect works on this subject and this is a worthy addition. Solid binding, decent paper — holds up to heavy use. Solid, if not essential.
My third book from this store and this one might be the best. The text itself is dense but rewarding — you get out what you put in. The material is presented clearly and the structure makes it easy to revisit key passages. Happy enough with the purchase.
Heaven provides a compelling overview of Ayahuasca’s role in facilitating vision and healing. However, readers seeking rigorous academic anthropology or strict scientific pharmacology may find the focus on 'plant teacher' dynamics too esoteric. It is not suited for skeptics who demand empirical data over spiritual testimony. The tone is warm but assumes an openness to Western shamanism that some traditionalists might critique. Nevertheless, it remains a vital resource for those already committed to the path of exploring the gap between physical reality and the spiritual world through indigenous wisdom.
