Fun Fact

This translation is an invaluable acquisition for serious students of classical astrology. It meticulously presents Morin’s complex, event-focused predictive methods, offering unparalleled depth into Primary Directions and his distinctive theory of determinations. While it might prove challenging for novices or disappoint those seeking purely psychological or esoteric insights, it's an indispensable cornerstone for any practitioner dedicated to mastering the rigorous science of traditional astrological prognostication.

📝 Description: Astrologia Gallica Book 22

This book is an English translation of Morin's treatise on Primary Directions, which constitutes Book 22 of his Astrologia Gallica, with appendices containing supplementary material relating to Book 22, and addenda containing fundamental astrological principles, in particular the Table of Universal Rulerships of the Planets from Book 13, the Universal Laws of Judgments of Solar and Lunar Returns from Book 23, and Aphorisms stating the Principal Laws of Transits along with Rules for the Prediction of Future Events from Book 24. This translation supplements Richard S. Baldwin's translation of Book 21 on Determinations (also published by the AFA). The two translations together provide a core subset of the theory of Natal Astrology set forth by J-B Morin (1583-1656), the leading figure of French astrology. Morin's theory is based upon the use of determinations and accidental significators. Thus, it differs radically from the common theory that largely ignores derived houses and uses universal significators. Also, it is event-oriented rather than esoteric or psychological. The translator, James Herschel Holden, is Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers and has been especially interested in the history of astrology.

🎯 Key themes and symbolism

Morin's Distinctive System

Morin's astrological framework represents a significant departure from prevalent methodologies. He prioritizes 'determinations' and 'accidental significators,' creating a highly individualized system for chart analysis. This approach contrasts sharply with the reliance on universal significators and derived houses, advocating for a more granular and precise understanding of planetary influences on a native's life.

Precision in Prediction

Unlike many contemporary or esoteric astrological systems that focus on psychological insights or broad spiritual themes, Morin’s work is resolutely pragmatic and event-focused. His techniques are designed to pinpoint specific life occurrences, offering a tangible and verifiable method for forecasting future events based on the natal chart’s precise configurations and movements.

📜 Historical context

Jean-Baptiste Morin, a preeminent French astrologer of the 17th century, revolutionized the field with his Astrologia Gallica. This translation of Book 22, along with its companion Book 21, forms the bedrock of his natal astrology theory.
