Fun Fact

Faggionato delivers a vital corrective to esoteric historiography, proving that Russian Masonry operated on its own distinct moral and political logic. The research is rigorous and the context richly detailed. However, readers seeking purely mystical rituals or spiritual instructions will find little here. It sits firmly as a scholarly essential for those studying the complex interplay of faith, philosophy, and power in imperial Russia.

📝 Description: A Rosicrucian Utopia in Eighteenth-Century Russia: The Masonic Circle of N.I. Novikov (2005)

This is the first investigation of the history of Russian Freemasonry, based on the premise that the facts of the Russian Enlightenment preclude application of the interpretative framework commonly used for the history of western thought. Coverage includes the development of early Russian masonry, the formation of the Novikov circle in Moscow, the 'programme' of Rosicrucianism and its Russian variant and, finally, the clash between the Rosicrucians and the State. Faggionato delivers a rigorous academic analysis that successfully recontextualizes Russian Freemasonry beyond Western frameworks. The text is dense with historical detail regarding Novikov’s circle and its political undertones. However, readers seeking accessible popular history or general introductions to occultism may find the scholarly tone inaccessible and the focus on specific lodge formations overly technical. It is not suited for casual readers looking for mystical practices or biography; rather, it demands patience from those interested in structural historiography and the sociology of esoteric groups during the autocratic period.
