About the author
Jean Markale was a French writer and specialist in Celtic civilization and medieval culture, and one of the most prolific authors published in English by Inner Traditions International, with fifteen titles listed in this catalogue. His books include The Epics of Celtic Ireland: Ancient Tales of Mystery and Magic, a study of Irish epic literature restored to what he argued was its pre-Christian sacred context; Courtly Love: The Path of Sexual Initiation, which connects medieval troubadour culture to Tantric practice; Cathedral of the Black Madonna, on Druidic worship and the cathedral at Chartres; The Pagan Mysteries of Halloween, tracing the holiday to the Celtic festival of Samhain; and The Church of Mary Magdalene, examining the church at Rennes-le-Château. Markale wrote across mythology, medieval history, and esoteric interpretation, consistently arguing for pre-Christian roots beneath later religious and cultural traditions.
