This edition finally does the material justice. The material is presented clearly and the structure makes it easy to revisit key passages. Would buy from this store again.
Took a chance on this and glad I did. Every rereading turns up something I missed.
Came across this title in a footnote and had to track it down. It connects ideas I'd only seen treated separately elsewhere.
Long-time student of the esoteric here. There's real depth here that reveals itself on a second reading. The typesetting is comfortable for study, with good margins for notes. One of my better finds this year.
A friend in my study group recommended this one. The text itself is dense but rewarding — you get out what you put in. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition.
Ben-Dov provides a valuable corrective to modern tarot by highlighting the Marseille deck's geometric simplicity. However, this focus on historical purity means it does not suit readers seeking elaborate visual interpretations or those attached to the Rider-Waite-Smith imagery. The text prioritizes iconographic evolution over poetic narrative, which may feel dry to those expecting mystical flair. It is best for historians and purists willing to engage with woodcut motifs directly. While the full-color presentation aids study, the dense historical survey might overwhelm beginners looking for quick, intuitive spreads. It is a rigorous academic yet practical tool, not a casual introduction to card reading.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Ideal for tarot practitioners who feel constrained by the complexity of Rider-Waite-Smith imagery, this guide suits those seeking a return to foundational symbolism. It is also perfect for historians of the occult who wish to understand the structural integrity of the original French patterns.
🎯 Key themes and symbolism
Geometric Purity
The book emphasizes the Marseille deck's distinct lack of intricate pictorial detail, arguing that this simplicity forces the reader to engage with pure archetypes rather than narrative illustrations. It explores how the rigid, symmetrical compositions of the original woodcuts create a direct, unmediated channel for divination, stripping away the emotional bias found in more elaborate decks.
Historical Lineage
Ben-Dov meticulously traces the deck's evolution from medieval playing cards to its current status as a spiritual tool. The text contextualizes the Marseille patterns within the broader history of European occultism, explaining how specific artistic choices in the 17th and 18th centuries shaped the symbolic language that modern practitioners still rely upon today.
Intuitive Application
Moving beyond mere description, the guide offers specific methodologies for reading these cards in a contemporary context. It teaches readers how to bypass intellectual analysis and tap into subconscious intuition, using the traditional meanings as a scaffold for personal insight rather than a rigid set of rules.
