⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
Been hunting for a decent copy of this text for ages. It reads better in small doses — a chapter at a time with notes. Already eyeing my next order.
A friend in my study group recommended this one. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition. Deserves a place on any esoteric bookshelf.
Bought this as a gift for my sister and ended up ordering a second copy for myself. The text itself is dense but rewarding — you get out what you put in. Already eyeing my next order.
Stefoff delivers a comprehensive overview that serves as an excellent primer for the academic study of magic. Its strength lies in its balanced, detached approach, avoiding both endorsement and debunking to focus on historical evolution and cultural significance. However, this work does not suit readers seeking practical grimoires, spellcasting instructions, or personal spiritual guidance. Those looking for esoteric secrets or partisan advocacy for specific magical traditions will likely find the tone too dry and analytical. It is strictly an intellectual survey, ideal for students of religion and culture, but perhaps disappointing for practitioners hoping for hands-on occult wisdom or mystical revelation within these pages.
