📝 Description: Ancient Spells and Incantations: Echoes of Magic Through the Ages and Across Cultures

Enid Baxter Ryce presents a collection of ancient spells and incantations gathered from grimoires, letters, trial transcripts, papyrus scraps, and pottery shards across centuries and global cultures. The adapted verses cover magical practices of manifestation, prophecy, love, protection, healing, curses, and vengeance. Ryce translated several entries directly from Latin and Old English, drawing from texts long housed in university libraries. The work connects modern readers to the survived words once chanted, written in cursive, or carved into stone by earlier practitioners. As a descendant of three Salem witches with a long family history of natural magic, Ryce brings a personal heritage to this volume. She is an artist, writer, filmmaker, and recipient of the Elizabeth Kray Prize from the Society for American Poets. Her academic background includes studies at Cooper Union, Yale University, and Claremont Graduate University, alongside exhibitions at the Getty and the National Gallery of Art. The book suits active witches, magical practitioners, and readers seeking historical spells adapted for contemporary use. It does not suit those looking for modern invented rituals or general histories disconnected from primary historical texts.

Enid Baxter Ryce delivers a meticulously curated collection that resurrects potent incantations from obscure grimoires and academic archives. The translation work is commendable, making Latin and Old English formulas accessible to contemporary magicians. However, readers seeking new, original spells or purely theoretical discourse may find the content derivative or dry. It is not suited for those who prefer immediate practical instructions over historical context. While the scholarship is diligent and the selection diverse, covering love to justice, it demands a reader willing to engage with antiquity rather than demand modern innovation. The value lies in its authenticity and breadth.
