About the author
Martti Nissinen is a Finnish scholar of the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern religion, long associated with the University of Helsinki, where he has held a professorship in Old Testament studies. His research centers on prophecy as a social and religious phenomenon across the ancient Near East, comparing biblical prophetic texts with cuneiform and other non-biblical sources from Mesopotamia and the surrounding region. Prophets and Prophecy in the Ancient Near East, published by SBL Press, is representative of this work: an edited collection of translated and annotated documents, including oracle reports, letters, and administrative references to prophets, intended to give students and researchers direct access to primary sources rather than secondhand summary. Nissinen's scholarship is used widely in academic settings for its combination of philological care and comparative method, situating Israelite prophecy within a broader ancient Near Eastern context instead of treating it as a uniquely biblical phenomenon.
