About the author
John H. Elliott is a biblical scholar known for applying social-scientific methods to New Testament interpretation. His multi-volume study "Beware the Evil Eye" traces belief in the evil eye from its ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean roots through Greek and Roman culture to its appearances in the Hebrew Bible, Second Temple Jewish writings, and the New Testament, including Jesus's reference to it in the Sermon on the Mount. Published by Cascade Books across several volumes, the series works through primary textual sources in detail, cataloguing explicit and implicit references to the belief across biblical and related ancient literature. The books are aimed at scholars, students of biblical studies, and readers with a serious interest in the cultural history of a belief that appears across many ancient Mediterranean societies, rather than general readers of popular occult history.
