About the author
François Lenormant (1837-1883) was a French historian and Assyriologist who worked extensively on the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and the decipherment of cuneiform sources. His study Chaldean Magic: Its Origin and Development, first published in French in the 1870s and reissued in English in the multiple editions listed here, examines the magical and religious practices of ancient Chaldea, covering sorcery, demonology, amulets, funerary ritual, and the development of Chaldean mythology in relation to neighboring traditions. The book was among the earlier scholarly attempts to treat Mesopotamian magic as a subject of historical and philological study rather than curiosity, drawing on cuneiform tablet evidence available in his period. Later editions from Routledge and Weiser Books have kept the work in circulation for readers of the history of religion and ancient Near Eastern studies, alongside general readers interested in the origins of Western occult tradition.
