About the author
Arthur Edward Waite (A. E. Waite) was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 2, 1857, to an American mother and an English father. After his father's early death, he moved with his mother to England, where he spent most of his life. Largely self-taught in esoteric subjects, Waite developed a profound interest in mysticism, alchemy, Kabbalah, and ceremonial magic from a young age. He became a prolific author, translator, and editor, dedicating his life to the study and interpretation of occult traditions. Waite was a member of several esoteric organizations, most notably the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which he joined in 1891. He later became a leader of a faction within the Order, aiming to steer it towards a more mystical and Christian-oriented path. His major works include "The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts" (1898), later revised as "The Book of Ceremonial Magic" (1911), "The Pictorial Key to the Tarot" (1910), which accompanied the Rider-Waite Tarot deck he co-created with Pamela Colman Smith, and "The Holy Kabbalah" (1929).
