About the author
Christopher McIntosh is a British historian of Western esotericism, known for his scholarly work on Rosicrucianism, the French occult revival, and the esoteric histories of Germany and Russia. His books include Eliphas Lévi and the French Occult Revival, published by State University of New York Press, a classic study of the nineteenth-century French magician Eliphas Lévi (1810-1875) and the wider revival of occultism he helped inspire, and The Rosicrucians: The History, Mythology, and Rituals of an Esoteric Order, which traces the Fraternity of the Rosy Cross from the legend of Christian Rosenkreuz through its influence on alchemy, Freemasonry, and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. More recently, Occult Germany and Occult Russia, both from Inner Traditions International, survey the survival and revival of pre-Christian gods, folk practice, and esoteric movements in each country from antiquity to the present. His earlier academic study The Rose Cross and the Age of Reason, published by Brill, examines Rosicrucianism's relationship to the Enlightenment in eighteenth-century Germany.
