Needed this for my research. You can tell why this work has endured. A keeper.
This edition finally does the material justice. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers. The font runs small in the appendices. Still worth having on the shelf.
Came across this title in a footnote and had to track it down. The historical context alone makes it worth the price. Solid, if not essential.
Judika Illes curates a haunting anthology that successfully rescues forgotten tales by literary giants from obscurity. The collection is intellectually provocative, offering readers a chance to witness the raw sources that shaped modern supernatural storytelling. However, this book does not suit readers seeking light, fast-paced entertainment or purely visceral horror without depth. It requires a willingness to engage with dense, archaic prose and complex esoteric concepts. Those looking for straightforward spooky tales may find the material too academic or obscure. The value lies in its role as an occult primer and historical bridge, making it essential for serious students of the genre rather than casual readers.
