Fun Fact

This edition succeeds as both a devotional object and a historical document, appealing to those who treat Thelema as a lived aesthetic practice. The two-color printing and manuscript facsimile add significant value for serious collectors. However, casual readers seeking introductory Thelemic philosophy may find it dense and visually overwhelming. It sits firmly at the intersection of sacred text and collector's item, perfect for the shelf of the committed Thelemite.

📝 Description: The Book of the Law: Liber Al Vel Legis: With a Facsimile of the Manuscript as Received by Aleister and Rose Edith Crowley on April 8, 9, 10, 1904

The Book of the Law is the central holy text for Aleister Crowley's spiritual framework of Thelema, serving as a foundational reference across modern occult practice. Written down across April 8, 9, and the following day in 1904, the work contains the dictated transmissions Crowley received from an entity called Aiwass during the Cairo Working, facilitated alongside his wife Rose Edith Crowley as medium. Its passages set forth the foundational law, Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law, establishing the core tenets of the author's ritual and mystical system. This centennial hardcover edition from Weiser Books, issued with the Ordo Templi Orientis, contains the corrected 1938 text together with a facsimile of Crowley's original handwritten cipher manuscript. The physical volume includes full-color reproductions of both sides of the Stele of Revealing, printed using two-color black and red ink on coated archival paper. The book features gold foil stamping, color endpapers, head and tail bands, a flat-back case, and a sewn binding with a silken ribbon marker. This publication suits Crowley students, Thelemites, and practitioners studying magick, occultism, dream work, witchcraft, or mysticism who require the complete source manuscript alongside the standard text. It is not designed for readers seeking introductory instructional guides or general historical overviews of early twentieth-century esoteric movements.

This limited edition succeeds as a beautiful artifact for those deeply invested in Thelemic history or seeking a visually striking companion to the core text. However, it is strictly for enthusiasts who appreciate the physicality of esoteric publications and have prior familiarity with Crowley’s work. Readers expecting a straightforward introductory guide to occultism will find its dense historical framing and specific aesthetic choices alienating. It lacks the accessibility required for casual spiritual seekers, serving instead as a premium object for those already committed to the tradition. Those unfamiliar with the Stele or the Cairo incident may struggle to grasp its significance without external study.

Good but demanding

Long-time student of the esoteric here. The text itself is dense but rewarding — you get out what you put in. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Good, with the caveats above.

Mixed feelings

Came across this title in a footnote and had to track it down. Every rereading turns up something I missed. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Solid, if not essential.

Beautiful edition

My book club chose this last month. The symbolism is layered and generous to patient readers.

My third book from this store and this one might be the best. Challenging in places, but never needlessly obscure. I found myself reading passages aloud just to sit with them. Great value for what you get.

📜 Historical context

Liber AL vel Legis emerged from the Cairo Working in April 1904, where Crowley, guided by the entity Aiwass, recorded the core tenets of Thelema. This centennial edition honors that pivotal moment, preserving the historical manuscript while updating the text to the authoritative 1938 revision, bridging the gap between the initial reception and the matured theological framework of the order.
