Fun Fact

Clune delivers a visceral tour of Alcatraz’s spectral underbelly, effectively weaving historical tragedy with ghostly lore. The prose is engaging for those who enjoy atmospheric dread over academic rigor. However, skeptics seeking hard evidence will find little here beyond folklore. It sits comfortably within the genre of haunted location guides, offering a chilling, albeit unverified, perspective on America's most infamous prison.

📝 Description: Ghosts and Legends of Alcatraz

Alcatraz is one of the most infamous prisons in the world. Evil spirits, unknown beasts, vicious murderers and an untold number of ghosts all are said to reside on this tiny island in San Francisco Bay. Rufus McCain, who died a brutal death at the hands of a fellow inmate, is said to roam the grounds, and the basement cells used for solitary confinement were rumored to be so frightening that inmates who endured one stint never wanted to go back. Multiple escape attempts were thwarted, including two attempts by Sam Shockley, who was later executed with fellow inmate Miran Thomson. Join Bob Davis and Brian Clune as they explore chilling tales of death, murder and savagery from America's Devil's Island.

Occult literature desk

While this volume successfully catalogs the haunting reputation of Alcatraz, it may disappoint those seeking rigorous academic analysis or fresh investigative journalism. Readers expecting new evidence or debunking myths might find the focus on established legends and 'evil' somewhat repetitive or overly atmospheric rather than analytical. It is best suited for casual enthusiasts of ghost lore who appreciate a narrative approach to the island's macabre history. However, skeptics or those looking for hard historical data without spiritual interpretation will likely find little value here, as it fully embraces the perspective of spectral activity and lingering sorrow.

Exactly as described

Honestly wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm impressed. You can tell why this work has endured. It pairs well with more modern commentaries on the same tradition. Glad I finally picked this up.

This edition finally does the material justice. The ideas are old but land with surprising force today. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Solid, if not essential.

Came across this title in a footnote and had to track it down. Every rereading turns up something I missed. It connects ideas I'd only seen treated separately elsewhere. My only quibble is the cover feels thinner than expected. Solid, if not essential.
