A rich, dark mystery set in repressed 19th-century London.”
“in their sexual proclivities. ... Brennan's reveals, when they come, are plenty shocking, but the narrative's main strength is its vivid portrayal of a segment of Victorian society rarely depicted in mysteries. This illuminates a dark corner of British history, with grimly satisfying results.”

⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
Brennan crafts a vivid tableau of Victorian London’s secretive gay circles, blending mystery with poignant social commentary. The shifting perspectives effectively peel back layers of class disparity and forbidden desire, creating an immersive experience for those invested in queer historical narratives. However, readers seeking fast-paced action or straightforward police procedurals may find the focus on atmospheric tension and emotional nuance too slow. It is not suited for those uncomfortable with explicit themes of illicit passion or the grim realities of workhouse life depicted here. The book demands patience for its character-driven depth rather than plot-heavy thrills, making it a niche but rewarding choice for dedicated fans of the genre.
