About the author
Neil Rolde, a Maine historian, legislator, and prolific author, wrote widely on Maine history as well as on twentieth-century American political history. His two books here, published by Polar Bear & Company, focus on Breckinridge Long, the U.S. State Department official responsible for wartime visa policy: Breckinridge Long, American Eichmann examines Long's character and his role in restricting the immigration of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution, while More Than a Teardrop in the Ocean continues the account through the history of the War Refugee Board. Rolde's books document how the great majority of available immigration quota places from German- and Italian-controlled countries went unfilled during the war, and how the War Refugee Board, established by Roosevelt in 1944, responded. Together they form a detailed historical account of American immigration policy and bureaucratic failure during the Holocaust, aimed at readers of twentieth-century political and diplomatic history.
