About the author
James Wasserman was an American author and longtime member of the occult scene associated with Aleister Crowley's teachings, active in New York occult circles from the 1960s onward. His memoir In the Center of the Fire recounts his years within that milieu, describing occult study groups, ritual practice, and the personalities he encountered. His other books turn to historical and symbolic subjects connected to esotericism: The Temple of Solomon traces the temple's afterlife in Freemasonry, Kabbalah, and Islamic tradition; An Illustrated History of the Knights Templar and The Templars and the Assassins examine the medieval military orders and their legacy; The Secrets of Masonic Washington maps Masonic symbolism in the US capital; and The Mystery Traditions surveys esoteric symbolism more broadly. Across these illustrated, research-driven books, Wasserman wrote for readers interested in Western esotericism, Freemasonry, and the historical record behind occult secret societies.
