About the author
Théodore Flournoy (1854-1920) was a Swiss psychologist and philosopher who held a professorship at the University of Geneva and was among the founders of scientific psychology in French-speaking Switzerland. He is best known for From India to the Planet Mars: A Study of a Case of Somnambulism, his 1900 study of the medium Hélène Smith, whose trance performances included apparent past-life memories of India and an invented Martian language. Flournoy analyzed the case with a psychologist's skepticism, treating Smith's productions as products of subconscious creativity rather than genuine spirit communication or extraterrestrial contact, and the book became an influential early study in the psychology of mediumship. It shaped later thinking on the unconscious, including the work of Carl Jung, who engaged with Flournoy's ideas. Current editions, including reprints from Legare Street Press and Cosimo Classics, keep this foundational text in print for readers of psychology and the history of spiritualism.
