About the author
Stephen Clucas is a scholar whose academic work centers on the Elizabethan mathematician and magus John Dee. His edited volume John Dee: Interdisciplinary Studies in English Renaissance Thought (Springer, editions from 2006 and 2010) grew out of a 1995 colloquium at Birkbeck College, University of London, bringing together scholars from multiple fields to examine Dee's life and intellectual output. His collection Magic, Memory and Natural Philosophy in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (Routledge) gathers his own articles on the interactions between religion, natural philosophy, and magic in early modern Europe, including further work on Dee's angelic conversations and their debt to earlier magical and philosophical traditions. His work sits within the history of science and intellectual history rather than practical occultism, aimed at researchers and readers interested in Renaissance thought.
