About the author
Rebecca Beattie is the author of two titles in Moon Books' Pagan Portals series, a line of short introductory guides to specific areas of modern paganism. Pagan Portals: Planetary Magic (2023) surveys how practitioners of pagan witchcraft have drawn on the astrological planets throughout the history of magical practice, tracing that association from its earliest recorded beginnings. Her earlier book, Pagan Portals - Nature Mystics (2015), takes a different approach, profiling ten writers whose work helped shape the cultural ground from which modern paganism grew, among them John Keats, Thomas Hardy, D.H. Lawrence, and Sylvia Townsend Warner. Together the two books show a writer working at the meeting point of literary history and pagan practice, equally interested in ritual technique and in the literary figures who gave paganism its modern vocabulary. Both are pitched at readers already familiar with the broader pagan tradition.
