About the author
Peter A. Levine is an American psychologist and the originator of Somatic Experiencing, a body-based approach to treating trauma that grew out of his early work observing stress responses in animals. He is best known for his earlier book Waking the Tiger, and his later work In an Unspoken Voice: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness restates and extends the theory behind Somatic Experiencing for a wide readership. Trauma and Memory: Brain and Body in a Search for the Living Past addresses the mechanics of traumatic memory more directly, written with psychotherapists and their clients in mind and carrying a foreword by Bessel van der Kolk. His memoir, An Autobiography of Trauma: A Healing Journey, turns to his own history, including the childhood trauma that shaped his interest in the field. Levine's books, published by North Atlantic Books and Sounds True among others, have been influential in the development of somatic and body-oriented trauma therapy.
