About the author
Nicholas E. Brink has written three books published by Bear & Company on ecstatic trance and shamanic practice: Baldr's Magic: The Power of Norse Shamanism and Ecstatic Trance, Ecstatic Soul Retrieval: Shamanism and Psychotherapy, and Trance Journeys of the Hunter-Gatherers. Baldr's Magic uses ecstatic trance postures associated with Norse tradition to explore connection with ancestors and altered states linked to Nordic mythology. Ecstatic Soul Retrieval combines shamanic soul retrieval techniques with psychotherapeutic frameworks, aimed at readers working through emotional difficulty. Trance Journeys of the Hunter-Gatherers looks further back, to practices associated with hunter-gatherer societies, framing ecstatic trance as a route to connection with animal spirit guides and the natural world. Across the three books, Brink's consistent focus is trance posture work as a shamanic technique, combining anthropological framing with practical instruction for readers interested in trance-based spiritual practice and its potential integration with psychological work.
