About the author
José Leitão works as a translator and researcher of Portuguese-language grimoires and folk-magical traditions. His two books listed here are both translations: The Book of St. Cyprian: The Sorcerer's Treasure, a rendering of one of the most complete Portuguese grimoires attributed to St. Cyprian of Antioch, published by Hadean Press in 2014 with extensive commentary on the history of western Iberian bruxaria and feitiçaria, and Precious Apothecary: A Catholic Grimoire, a translation of the eighteenth-century Botica Preciosa compiled by the Brazilian missionary Ângelo de Sequeira Ribeiro do Prado, issued by Avalonia. Together the two volumes make historical Portuguese and Brazilian magical and devotional texts available to English-language readers, with attention to their religious context within Catholic folk practice. These are reference-oriented editions suited to readers interested in the history of European grimoires and Iberian folk magic rather than general introductions to witchcraft or spellcraft.
