About the author
J W Wickwar is the author of "Witchcraft and the Black Art: A Book Dealing with the Psychology and Folklore of the Witches," originally published in the early twentieth century and reissued by Obscure Press. The book sets out to survey witchcraft as it was recorded in early ecclesiastical and medieval literature, working from the premise that the historical craft of witches operated as a secretive order that left behind only scattered records. It combines folklore, psychology and historical reference in an attempt to give a coherent account of what witchcraft meant to those who practiced and prosecuted it. As the only title associated with this author in the catalogue, it represents an early, pre-academic contribution to the study of witchcraft history, of interest today chiefly to readers researching the development of witchcraft historiography and older folklore scholarship rather than to practitioners of contemporary witchcraft.
