About the author
Henrik Bogdan is a professor of religious studies at the University of Gothenburg, working in the field of Western esotericism, with particular attention to Freemasonry and related initiatory traditions. His book Western Esotericism and Rituals of Initiation, published by State University of New York Press, examines more than three centuries of Masonic initiation rites and traces how practices originating within organized Freemasonry spread into a wider range of esoteric and occult groups beyond the lodge itself. The book treats ritual initiation as a historical phenomenon to be documented and analyzed rather than a practice to be taught, situating Freemasonry within the broader academic study of Western esotericism alongside movements such as Rosicrucianism and ceremonial magic. It is used as a scholarly reference on the structure and history of initiatory ritual, and the catalogue lists two printings of the same title from 2007 and 2008.
