About the author
Thomas Sugrue (1907-1953) was an American journalist and writer best known for There Is a River, his 1942 biography of the psychic Edgar Cayce, first published by Henry Holt and reissued many times since, including editions from A.R.E. Press and Legare Street Press listed here. The book chronicles Cayce's life and his trance readings, which addressed health, reincarnation, and other topics, and it remains the standard biographical account used by Cayce's own Association for Research and Enlightenment. Sugrue met Cayce personally and wrote the book partly while recovering from a severe illness, drawing on Cayce's case files and family for the narrative. There Is a River helped introduce Cayce to a wider audience and established the template that later biographies of him followed, making Sugrue's book a foundational text in the literature on Cayce specifically rather than on psychic phenomena in general.
